Why your support bot sounds bored

Flat voices are rarely about the voice. They are about missing context. Here is how to give it back.

A support bot can say every word correctly and still sound like it would rather be somewhere else. The fix is usually not a new voice. It is telling the voice what kind of moment it is in.

Emotion follows context

The same sentence, “I can help with that”, should sound different after “my card was stolen” than after “can I change my username”. Pass the conversation’s mood along with the text and the delivery adjusts.

Pace matters more than pitch

Rushed answers feel dismissive. Slow ones feel patronising. Match the caller: slightly slower for bad news, brisker for simple confirmations.

Leave room for the human

Tiny pauses after a question tell the caller it is their turn. Without them, people interrupt, and interruptions make everything feel worse.

Three settings to try first

  • Raise expressiveness one step for apologies and good news
  • Lower speaking rate by ten percent for anything involving money
  • Add a short pause before reading back numbers

Callers rarely notice when a voice gets this right. They just stay on the line a little longer and hang up a little happier.
